The process of contact of the Achuar with the national society has been similar to that of the Shuar but at a later time. At present, a large part of the Achuar population is part of the Shuar Federation and participates in the programs and problems of the Shuar. The Shuar and Achuar have been integrated and now make up the Shuar-Achuar community with more than 40,000 indigenous people who live in the Santiago, Morona, and Pastaza river basins. They occupy the east of the province of Morona Santiago and the south of the province of Pastaza. The Shuar or Shuara are just over 35,000 indigenous and the Achuar, just under 8,000. In the territories occupied by Peru, there are also some Achuar groups that were separated by the Protocol of Rio de Janeiro. These towns are ethnically related to the Peruvians Wampis, Awajún, Mainas, etc., up to the Marañón.
