PACAYA SAMIRIA EXPEDITION 7 DAYS; "The ecological attractions of the Peruvian Amazon seem infinite in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.  During this expedition, visitors will get the opportunity to visit a variety of remote lagoons including one exploration area well known for the locals and past visitors for its abundance of fauna and flora, "The Yanayacu-Pucate" jungle area.


  • Booking in Advance is Highly Recommended; for the collection of personal information, to request authorization of entry to indigenous territories at all levels (national, regional, and communal authorities), logistic preparation, personnel assignment, etc.

  • Arrival and Departure Recommendation to and from Iquitos; 1 day before and 1 day after your trip.

  • Be advised; river navigation on motorboats deep into this National Protected Area could normally take up to 3 to 5hrs. per day to successfully explore the wildlife of its ecosystem.

  • All activities are subject to change due to weather conditions at any time of the year. The main rivers and the levels of the tributaries can vary and, therefore, it is possible that the navigation times and the excursions are modified at the discretion of the guide, this will not alter our motivation to make this trip the best.

⬜ DAY 0

  • Private Transportation from Iquitos Airport to Hotel.



⬜ DAY 1

08:00 Private transportation from Iquitos to Nauta City.
10:00 Arrival at Nauta city, followed by a tour of the city.
12:00 Departure upstream boating on the Marañon River into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (50 miles SW / approximately 3 hours and a half from Nauta).

  • Arrival at the reserve’s entrance checkpoint, passenger's identification will be required.

  • Arrival in the Arequipa community camping equipment will be set up.

  • Lunch will be served upon arrival.

  • Observation of diverse species of birds along the way, including egrets, jacanas, parrots hawks, horned screamers, and parakeets. 

  • If lucky visitors will have the possibility to observe Pink and Grey River dolphins.

  • Observation of sunset.

  • Catch and release caiman excursion, visitors will have the opportunity to hold, touch, and take photos with the caimans.

  • Return to Camp for Dinner.


⬜ DAY 2
06:00 Early morning hike.

  • Breakfast will be served.   

  • We will cruise the Marañon River for about 3 hours until we reach our destination (Shansho Cocha Lake). During the riverboat trip, you will have a great possibility of seeing primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins, and many other species of flora/fauna along the riverbanks.

  • Arrival to campsite area #2, Lunch will follow.

  • Something that immediately catches our attention is the black waters of the rivers, which reflects with such an identical image of the sky, the clouds, the bank’s vegetation, and the huge trees, visitors will have the sensation of traveling on mirrors; this is why the Pacaya Samiria is many times referred to as the “jungle of the mirrors”.

  • Piranha fishing, and other species of fish.

  • Dinner will be served at the Camping site.

  • Night jungle excursion will follow in search of (nocturnal monkeys, lizards, snakes, and spiders). 


⬜ DAY 3
05:30 Navigation upstream into the National Reserve via Maranon River for observation of monkeys, toucans, and lazy bears, breakfast will be served on board, later will be entering the Rio Yanayacu (close to Pueblo 20 de Enero).

  • We will cruise the river until we reach our destination. During the riverboat trip, you will have a great possibility of seeing many other species of animals along the riverbanks.

  • Arrival at Camping site #3, Lunch will follow.

  • Jungle hike into the Pacaya Samiria Reserve where visitors will have the unique opportunity to see a vast number of butterflies, much other wildlife, and interact in their natural habitat. We will see and learn about various types of Amazonian medicinal plants such as the Ayahuasca Vine (Banisteriopsis caapi), Cats Claw Vine (uncaria tomentosa), Victoria Amazonica, Ceiba Tree, Sensitive Plant (mimosa pudica), and more.

  • Jungle hike will continue to visit some remote lagoons.. Where they hold a great variety of palms, large trees, and a beautiful landscape.

  • While at this Lagoons we can conduct the following activities, dependent on the visitor's desires such as trekking, canoe rides, fishing, and identification of plants, animal spotting or maybe just relaxing with a nice cool swim in one of the lagoons.

19:00 Dinner will be served.


⬜ DAY 4
05:30 Observation of fauna and flora.

07:30 Breakfast will be served.
09:00 While we're still in the 20 de Enero area we will continue our jungle daily trekking, visiting other remote lagoons like "Japon Creek" and "Yanta Lake" in search of more wildlife and fishing activities.
13:30 Lunch will be served.

  • Boating in search of wild animals.

17:30 Rest.
19:00 Dinner will be served.

  • Night Exploration.

  • Assembly of camping equipment


⬜ DAY 5
07:00 Breakfast will be served.
08:00 Day Excursion to "Sacarita de Yarina" in searches of other animals like turtles with a great chance to see the elusive giant river otters, great swimmers, and fishers.
13:00 Arrival to the destination to set up the Camping area.
14:00 Lunch will be served

  • Exploration Hike.

18:00 Dinner will be served.
19:00 Night Excursion.


⬜ DAY 6
06:00 Morning breakfast will be served followed by a morning departure on our private motorboat, we will start making our way back downriver towards Nauta City.

  • Watch birds as they leave their nests to find their food on the river, among them cotingas, macaws, parrots and Harpy (Harpia harpyja).

  • Excursion to Yanaquillo Creek to spot squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), Saddleback tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) and sloths (Bradypus variegatus).

  • We will stop and see the giant Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), Capirona, and Capinurí (Heliocóstilis scabra) trees and also eye-catching birds as the Toucan (Pteroglossus), the Red Macaw (Ara macao), the Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), the Great Egret (Egreta alba) and the Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona).

  • We will stop for Lunch.

  • At night time after dinner, we will make a night excursion by boat to search for the various species of nocturnal animals; this also gives us the enjoyable opportunity to hear the symphony of sounds that come from the forest at night.


⬜ DAY 7

05:30 Early morning breakfast will be served followed by a morning departure on our boat to visit "Laguna Guaya". 

  • Canoe excursion to Yanayacu Pucate to spot squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), saddle back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis), sloths (Bradypus variegatus) & other types of monkeys.

  • Easy ride back with several short stops for photography of the area (fauna/flora and indigenous communities).

  • 15:00-16:00 Arrival to Nauta city.

  • Private transportation back to Iquitos city. 

  • 17:00-18:00 Arrival to Iquitos.

  • Transfer to the hotel and airport.
