MATSES EXPEDITION 15D/14N

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: MODERATE to HARD

AGE REQUIREMENT: 18 +

 

The Matsés or Mayoruna are an indigenous people of the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. The tribe's ancestral lands are currently being encroached by illegal logging practices and poaching. These homelands are located between the Javari and Galvez rivers. The Matsés have guarded their lands against both other indigenous tribes and outsider colonials.The approximately 3,200 Matsés people speak the Matsés language which belongs to the Panoan language family. In the last thirty years, they have become a largely settled people living mostly in permanent forest settlements. However, they still rely on hunting and gathering for most of their subsistence. Their main source of income comes from selling peccary hides and meat.

TERMS, CONDITIONS, AND TIPS FOR THIS PARTICULAR EXPEDITION:

  • BOOKING IN ADVANCED IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (for collection of personal information, government access permits to protected areas, transportation arrangements, assignment of exploration team, English Speaking Guides availability, and all logistics support needed).

  • Participants need to have sufficient time in Iquitos, in order to successfully execute this expedition.

  • Participants need to have flexible plane tickets to and from Iquitos, in case of small aircraft delays to Angamos.

  • Participants will need to be in good physical conditions, there will be a 50k hike to Requena during the last 2 days of the trip.

  • Exploratory backpack weight limit is 10 kilos per participant.  

  • Excess weight will not be accepted by the pilot.

  • Additional gear added to the participants exploratory backpacks (jungle boots, raincoats, mats, and tents) will be paid by AMAZON EXPEDITIONERS.

  • All activities are subject to change due to weather conditions any time of year. River and tributary levels may vary and thus navigation times and excursions may need to be modified at the guide’s discretion.

  • For participants not wanting or not physically fit to perform the last 2 days 50K hike through the jungle, please let us know before or right after booking  your trip for us to modified your return by a small aircraft. Participants will be responsible for not coordinating this as advised.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR EXPEDITION:

 

DAY 1-10

  • Aircraft to Angamos Village located on the Peru-Brazil border

  • Departure Time From 05:00-07:00am (Tuesdays and Thursdays Only) 

  • Live the once in a lifetime experience with the"Feline or Jaguar Tribe" sharing their daily customs and traditions in their own territory beyond from civilization. 

  • Navigation across Galvez River.

  • Navigation across Loboyaku River.

  • Navigation across Matanza River.

  • A trip to Requena Village.

  • Canoe day/night excursions.

  • Exploration excursions for observation of fauna and flora.Trips to visit "Collpas" derives from Quechua, which means salt land.

  • There are many places in this jungle territory with this characteristic on the banks and cliffs of the rivers. All kinds of animals flock to these places to lick the earth, these places contain calcium, sodium and mineral salts that complement nutrition and reduce the toxic effects of alkaloids contained in leaves, fruits, and seeds that animals consume. The "Collpas" will give participants a magnificent opportunity to watch parades, birds, and mammals at different times, different species of parrots, wild boars, tapirs, armadillos, monkeys, etc.

  • Learn how to harvest food from their plantations and crops"Chacras".

  • Learn how to utilize their weapons and hunt for daily survival.

  • Participate in elder narrations about their ancient stories.

  •  Primitive Fishing with a toxic plant called "Barbasco".

  • Jungle day/night excursions.

  •  Jungle Exploration in Search for Jaguars and other Felines.

  • Bird Watching Explorations.

  • Cayman (small alligator) catch and release.

  • Tracking and spotting animals (boas, anacondas, alligators, frogs, tarantulas, scorpions, iguanas, hawks and other birds, unique insects, monkeys, capybaras).

  • Swimming and spotting freshwater pink dolphins.

  • Learning about wild medicinal plants from the jungle.

  • Fishing for piranhas and catfish (keep what you catch!).

  • Navigations on remote creeks and lakes.

  • Overnight in typical village houses of their community.

  • Tabaco Sniffing Ceremony called "Nene" Ceremony. (optional).

  • The Green Giant Monkey Frog Ceremony, these frogs poison its best known as the "Vaccine of the Forest" the shamanic ritual is called "Kambo" Ceremony.

DAY 11-13

  • Motorboat to the Lobo River.

  • Bird watching. 

  • Hike through the complex jungle to the town of Requena (50 km).

  • Crossing of rivers, creeks, and streams.

  • Overnight in the middle of the jungle

 

 

DAY 14-15

  • Arrival to the town of Requena (hike will be over)

  • Transportation back to Iquitos in Public boat 

  • Transfer to the Hotel/Airport (End of the Journey)
