MATSES EXPEDITION (12 or 15 DAYS LONG) will not simply give travelers the adequate amount of time to explore interesting and key spots of the Matses territory, but it will also allow travelers the time to stop by for couple days to visit a group of elder traditional men and women who are consider the last generation of Matses people, and the only ones who still keep fresh in their memory their life in the past and the unforgettable moment lived during their first contact with modern civilizations.

Taking into account the days in your favor, we'll use the last 3 days of these expeditions to undertake an interesting and fast pace challenging hike through its primary jungle. This will be one of the very unique ways to escape from this territory by water and land in order to find another one with a river port. As soon as we reach this new Amazonian destination the group will proceed to finalize this crossing by navigating the Ucayali river until our final return back to the city of Iquitos.

The MATSES or MAYORUNA are indigenous people of the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. The tribe's ancestral lands are currently being encroached by illegal logging practices and poaching. These homelands are located between the Javari and Galvez rivers. The Matsés have guarded their lands against both other indigenous tribes and outsider colonials. The approximately 3,200 Matsés people speak the Matsés language which belongs to the Panoan language family. In the last thirty years, they have become a largely settled people living mostly in permanent forest settlements. However, they still rely on hunting and gathering for most of their subsistence. Their main source of income comes from selling peccary hides and meat.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • BOOKING IN ADVANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (for collection of personal information, government permissions to protected areas, logistical arrangements, exploration team assignments, English Speaking Guides availability, etc.).

  • In case we experience delays with hydroplanes departures to the Matses Territory due to weather conditions, we highly suggest the 2 following options: (option 1) to purchase FLEXIBLE AIRLINE TICKETS to/and from Iquitos, or (option 2) to consider programing your stay in Iquitos at the minimum 1 full day before and 2 full days after your scheduled expedition.

  • We Highly recommend packing a light rucksack of 10 kilos maximum for this expedition, excess weight will not be accepted in the hydroplane.

  • Travelers will be provided with an additional 5 kilos of gear approx. (tents, mosquito net, blankets, rubber boots, rain ponchos, machetes, and personal eating utensils).

  • Travelers gear requirement: rucksack, hydration bladder, sleeping mat, light sleeping bag, and a hammock with net and tarp.

  • Travelers must be in good physical condition to be able to carry out complex and long jungle hikes during this expedition.

  • Travelers will have the option to opt out from the 50 kilometers hike scheduled at the end of this expedition, and to fly back to Iquitos instead. This will change the expedition's level of difficulty from Challenging to Moderate.

  • All activities are subject to change due to weather conditions at any time of the year. Main Rivers and tributary levels may vary and thus navigation times and excursions may need to be modified at the guide’s discretion, this will not alter our motivation to make this trip the best as possible.
