TAMSHIACO-TAHUAYO REGIONAL CONSERVATION AREA

THESE EXPEDITIONS ARE AVAILABLE ALL YEAR ROUND

Best Months to Travel: Between May and February

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area (ACRCTT) is a protected area located southeast of Iquitos, which extends over the Peruvian department of Loreto, province of Maynas (district of Fernando Lores), Ramón Castilla (district of Yavarí) and Requena (Sapuena district and Yaquerana district). It was established by the Ministry of the Environment of Peru (MINAM, Ministry of the Environment) on May 15, 2009. The reserve is managed and financed by the Regional Government of Loreto.

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area covers an area of 4,200.8 km2 (420,080.25 ha, 1'038, 040.9 acre, 1,621.94 square miles) that includes floodplain forests and highlands of the Peruvian Amazon. It is known for its abundant wildlife. It has high levels of biodiversity, hundreds of species of mammals, primates, birds, fish, and reptiles have been documented, including several that are endemic and in danger of extinction or threatened.

This Conservation Area was established to conserve rainforest and upland rainforest ecosystems, as well as ecological and evolutionary processes of the area, guaranteeing the sustainable use of wildlife by the local population. Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo has several researchers and tourist activities focused on the observation of wildlife, which includes camping, hiking, boating, bird watching, fishing, and more.

The Amazon Crossing Expeditions route along the Tamshiaco-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area, is nothing less than a complete relaxing exploration and adventure trip traced and navigated extensively only by Amazon Expeditioners, which allow visitors the crossing of multiple rivers such as the Maranon, Ucayali, Yarapa, Tahuayo, Blanco, and at the very end the crossing of the Amazon River, along with several remote lagoons and creeks throughout its extensive ecosystem.

During this long navigation route, visitors will have the chance to pass by several riverine villages giving everyone the unique opportunity to learn how all these Amazonian people live on the shores of a large part of this beautiful Amazonia. On this extensive crossing adventure we’ll be also camping in different areas within its primary jungle and on the banks of the rivers, enjoying the tranquility of its wild environment and isolated jungle. On this particular crossing route all our visitors will spent their first receiving night in our Amazon Expeditioners Jungle Retreat Camp, the rest of the following nights will be spent in different places within the Amazon jungle in order to accomplish our Amazon crossing experience, with our final objective of ending our navigation journey reaching "Iquitos City" across a different exploratory path from where we started.

This route will cover the crossing of nearly 50% portion of the whole entire Tamshiaco-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area in a motorboat, beginning its navigation from the Nauta City Fluvial Port and reaching its end arriving at the Iquitos City Fluvial Port. In comparison to other exploration destinations, this route will not used the same path going and coming back.
